5. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

The photos shown below make it clear that the Olympus 4/300 doesn’t have practically any problems related to the longitudinal chromatic aberration. What’s important, the situation doesn’t change even after attaching the 1.4x tele-converter. A round of applause!

Now let’s check how the lens fares when it comes to the lateral chromatic aberration – the graph below shows results in that category depending on aperture values.

There is no trace of the aberration if you test the lens on its own – in an aperture range from f/4.0 to f/8.0 so for those values which are most commonly used during normal picture-taking the level of it amounted to less than 0.02%. After a more pronounced stopping down that value increased but it never exceeded 0.03%. A brilliant performance!

After attaching the tele-converter that image was spoiled a bit. By f/5.6 and f/8.0 the aberration still remained low, never exceeding 0.06%, but after a more distinct stopping down it got near 0.08%. Still even then it would be difficult to call it medium.

Spherical aberration

The first photos of this chapter makes it clear that the lens doesn’t have any “focus shift” effect. The situation doesn’t change after attaching the tele-converter – the circles we got in front of and behind the focus show no bothersome features and they are very much alike. It seems the spherical aberration is corrected well by the tested lens.
