7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

If you use an APS-C/DX sensor camera, coma shouldn’t be bothersome almost at all. When you progress to full frame you can notice some slight commas in the frame corners but it is not a serious reason to complain. Those deformations still seem to be less pronounced than those we saw in the test of the Canon 8-15 mm.

The assessment of astigmatism in fisheye lenses is always burdened with error. Resolution measurement fields in the centre are moved away from the middle of the frame more distinctly than in typical rectilinear lenses due to deformations of images. In the case of the Nikkor 8-15 mm we got a value of 9.9%, noticeably higher than the result of the Canon, 3.5%.

Huge depth of field, characteristic for fisheye lenses, means you don’t deal with wide out-of-focus areas often and if they are present, it is the easiest to spot them at 15 mm. That’s why, in order to assess bokeh properly, we present images of a defocused diode at that focal length exactly. No serious problems can be spotted anywhere – only a slightly emphasized rim of the circle and mechanical vignetting. These images are practically identical with the ones from the Canon 8-15 mm.
