5. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

Low dispersion elements, used in the optical construction of the tested Fujinon, seem to be performing as they should because we didn’t notice any distinct problems with longitudinal chromatic aberration. Even out-of-focus areas positioned in greater distances images aren’t tinted in a visible way.

When it comes to lateral chromatic aberration its level, depending on the focal length and aperture you employ, presents a graph below.

The shortest focal length seems to be the most problematic as, at that point, that aberration level is medium, with a slight decreasing tendency on stopping down.

In the middle of the range the problems end completely because the aberration is low, at 45 mm even negligible. The overall result in the chromatic aberration category is good and the tested Fujinon should be praised for it.

Spherical aberration

First photos of this chapter don’t show any ‘focus shift’ effect. Still spherical aberration is not corrected in a perfect way because defocused circles of light captured before and after the focus feature classic symptoms of that aberration. In one case the middle of the circle is dark, in the other – light.
