8. Vignetting

First let's check how the lens performs on the smaller APS-C sensor – appropriate thumbnails you can find below.

In this case vignetting doesn't seem problematic – even at the maximum relative aperture that aberration is not especially bothersome, amounting to just 18% (−0.59 EV). Then it decreases to 14% (−0.44 EV) on stopping down the aperture to f/2.0. By f/2.8 vignetting disappears practically completely, reaching just 5% (−0.15 EV).

Taking into account small dimensions of the lens we expected here very serious problems and we got a very pleasant surprise. By f/1.8 vignetting reaches 43% (−1.61 EV) – quite a lot but still far lower than in case of other Sony FE mount constructions. For example the Sony FE 1.8/85 at its maximum relative aperture showed brightness loss in frame corners of 58%.

By f/2.0 vignetting decreases to 36% (−1.30 EV), and by f/2.8 it drops further to 25% (−0.83 EV). You are no longer bothered by more serious problems by f/4.0 and f/5.6 apertures, where we got the following values: 21% (−0.68 EV) and 15% (−0.48 EV) respectively. By f/8.0 this aberration gets reduced even more, reaching just 12% (−0.36 EV). Further stopping down doesn't have any measurable influence on vignetting values.
