7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The Nikkor Z 14–30 mm f/4 S doesn't have any serious problems with coma. At the shortest focal length and in the corner of full frame you see a slight lengthening of images of the diode and in the 22-30 mm range that lengthening turns into a slight magnification of point-like images of stars.

Similar situation can be observed when you take photos of a starry sky - one example of such a phenomenon we show below.

Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S - Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values, amounted to 19.3% and it is a significant value. Still most of problems, connected to this aberration, you can experience at the maximum focal length where astigmatism level reaches 24.5% which is pretty high.

Defocused circles of light aren't perfect but it would be foolish to expect it from a lens with such parameters. After all its optical construction features as many as four aspherical elements – their presence is visible in the appearance of the circles as a slight onion-ring bokeh effect. What's interesting, at the maximum focal length the lens doesn't have any problems with mechanical vignetting as it appears only at the maximum relative aperture.
