3. Build quality

When it comes to lenses designed for full frame mirrorless cameras most of 28 mm f/2.8 models you can find among instruments for Leica rangefinder cameras - accordingly, there are plenty of them also in our chart. If you want to compare the tested lens to another device equipped with autofocus then the faster Sony FE 28 mm f/2 might be taken into account.

All lenses in this group are physically small and, additionally, the Nikkor is also the lightest among them. For a change, it is equipped with the biggest filter thread. In the photo below the Nikkor Z 28 mm f/2.8 SE is positioned between its reflex camera cousins, the 1.8/50, and the 1.8/85.

The proper barrel of the lens starts with a ring made of plastics that doesn't move; it features the name and parameters of the lens, its serial number, the logo of the producer, information that the lens was made in Thailand and its minimum focusing distance that amounts to 0.19m/0.63ft. A part of this ring is covered by fine ribbing.

A ribbed, silver manual focus ring, very narrow, just 4 mm wide, is the next part of the lens. It doesn't move and it turns smoothly into an equally narrow, immobile part of the barrel. Behind it you can find a manual focus ring covered by rubber ribs. It's a focus-by-wire construction as wide as 16 mm. Its focus throw amounts to an angle of about 90 degrees when you turn it fast but it can increase to 180 degrees if you move the ring slower. These values ensure you very precise settings.
