8. Vignetting

First let's check how the Sigma S 70-200 mm f/2.8 deals with vignetting on the smaller APS-C sensor and uncorrected JPEG format files – appropriate thumbnails can be seen below.

At the smaller APS-C sensor vignetting can be visible only and solely at the maximum relative aperture. Of course you can hardly call it a problem. At the combination of 70 mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture brightness loss in the frame corners amounts to 18% (−0.57 EV) and it decreases to a quite negligible value of 3% (−0.08 EV) on stopping down the aperture to f/4.0.

A very similar situation can be observed at 135 mm focal length where, by f/2.8, vignetting reaches 20% (−0.65 EV) and it decreases to 4% (−0.12 EV) on stopping down the aperture to f/4.0.

A tad more problems you can encounter at the maximum focal length where, by f/2.8, f/4.0 and f/5.6 vignetting reaches, respectively: 27% (−0.90 EV), 10% (−0.29 EV) and 3% (−0.09 EV).

Now let's check how the situation changes after passing to full frame – appropriate thumbnails you can find below.

This time the aberration is definitely easier to spot but its levels aren't so bad, especially for mirrorless standards. At 70 mm and f/2.8 brightness loss in the frame corners amounts to 49% (−1.94 EV) and it decreases to 28% (−0.93 EV) on stopping down the aperture to f/4.0. All problems end by f/5.6 and f/8.0 apertures where we got the following results: 15% (−0.46 EV) and 9% (−0.23 EV).

After changing the focal length to 135 mm the results are a bit higher. By f/2.8 vignetting amounts to 54% (−2.26 EV), by f/4.0 it reaches 31% (−1.06 EV), and by f/5.6 it decreases to 18% (−0.58 EV). By f/8.0 the problem disappears practically completely because we measured there just 11% (−0.35 EV) of light fall-off.

Very similar results you get at the maximum focal length. If you employ f/2.8 aperture you get 52% (−2.14 EV) of brightness loss in frame corners; after passing to f/4.0 that aberration decreases to 31% (−1.06 EV). By f/5.6 and f/8.0 aperture we got, respectively: 18% (−0.57 EV) and 10% (−0.23 EV).

At every focal length the Sigma fares a tad weaker than the more expensive Sony model. On the other hand at the longer focal lengths it gets results noticeably better than the results of the Tamron as its vignetting could approach even 59%.
