During the performance at the maximum relative aperture flares are not especially pronounced – not yet anyway. When the source of bright light is near the frame centre there are almost no artifacts at all. When you move it towards a corner a red arc appears, then you see the second, rainbow-coloured arc. The worst situation takes place when the sun is right outside the frame – a bright 'ghost' might appear in your photo.
Unfortunately, on stopping down the aperture all these effects only intensify. With the sun inside the frame there are more flares and light artifacts and the arcs become more distinct. I found a bright flare appearing when the sun is right outside the frame especially nasty. As if it wasn't enough, even if you position your camera with the tested lens in such a way that you can almost photograph your own feet you still can capture an array of small greenish artifacts.
In this category there is a lot of room for improvement. I suppose, the general reason behind such a weak performance against bright light and also high vignetting, described in the previous chapter, is the poor performance of coatings for light falling at steep angles.
