Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23 mm f/2.8 R WR

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

Simple, small optical constructions usually experience a lot of problems related to coma and other aberrations responsible for deformations of point-like light images. The Fujinon 2.8/23 doesn't deal with this problem in a perfect way but, at the same time, it shouldn't be criticized too harshly. The appearance of a diode put in the frame corner features a slight enlargement of the size and a seed of 'wings'. Fortunately, it's not a pronounced effect.

In order to present a comprehensive image in this category we decided to add crops taken from photos of sky taken from the upper right-hand corner of the detector. This time we show photos taken by f/2.8, f/4.0 and f/5.6. This test confirms our earlier conclusions and shows the aforementioned 'wings' and how quickly they decrease with the stopping down.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, amounted to 6.1%. It's a value positioned by us on the borderline between very low and low level so such that doesn't provide any reasons to complain.

Out-of-focus circles of light look very sensibly indeed. You can't find inside them any distinct local extreme points and even onion-ring bokeh, a result of adding two aspherical elements, is practically invisible. A brighter rim makes itself felt a bit, as its intensity increases with stopping down. Mechanical vignetting is also visible and it doesn't disappear even on stopping down the aperture by 2 EV but, with such a type of the lens, you should expect nothing less.
