3. Build quality

The Canon EF-S 17-85 mm, having a mediocre aperture, is a sizable lens of heavy weight. We compared its size with the Canon EF-S 18-55 mm and Sigma 18-125 mm f/3.5-5.6. The results are shown in the picture below.

We shouldn’t be surprised by the weight of the lens since it has to contain a lot of lenses to be as efficient at both the 17 mm and 85 mm verifocal lens extremes. The Canon has 17 lenses set up in 12 groups. One of these lenses has a two-sided aspheric element.

We have to add that in spite of its size and weight, the quality and general impression is very good.
