Pentax smc DA* 55 mm f/1.4 SDM

10. Autofocus

The new Pentax 55 is equipped with a supersonic autofocus motor marked with SDM. Thanks to it, autofocus works very silently – practically noiselessly. What’s interesting, focusing isn’t faster than with the older 1.4/50 lens. You might say the speed is similar, with slight indication on the older model, as the DA* 1.4/55 requires about one second to run through the scale in both ways.

We can’t write anything nice about the autofocus accuracy, as the result of 19% misses in studio conditions doesn’t do such an expensive lens credit.

Fortunately the lens didn’t show any definite tendency to front- or back-focus. And, even if it did, K20D allows you to calibrate the defect.
