The NEX Sony system was launched in May 2010 making it the youngest mirrorless system so far. Because of that, the offer of system lenses is currently very modest – it consists of two devices, which have been already launched and one, which is scheduled to hit the shelves soon.

Such a limited choice of lenses means that these devices which are already available must satisfy very high requirements because they simply lack any system alternatives. In such a situation the quality of those few already on the market indicates the quality of the whole system to a considerable degree; it might also become the bottleneck.

This time we decided to have a closer look at the so-called „kit” lens so an instrument with the standard 18-55 mm focal lengths range and f/3.5-5.6 fastness, equipped with image stabilization. Lenses of that type are very popular among amateur photographers so it is worth knowing whether or not they can be satisfied with its performance.

The lens was provided for testing purposes by the Cyfrowe.pl shop.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
