11. Summary

Pros:
  • well-done casing,
  • excellent or very good image quality in the frame centre for all apertures and focal lengths,
  • correct performance on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor,
  • low chromatic aberration,
  • no reservations concerning the spherical aberration correction,
  • moderate distortion,
  • excellent coma correction,
  • slight astigmatism,
  • low vignetting on APS-C/DX,
  • silent and efficient autofocus,
  • efficient image stabilization.

Cons:

  • weak performance against bright light,
  • a bit too high vignetting level on full frame.

There is no need to beat about the bush – we liked the Tamron SP 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD very much and we recommend it without scruples to anybody interested in such parameters. After such a test it would be difficult to bring in another verdict. The Tamron fares definitely better than the Tokina 80-400 mm, the Sigma 50-500 mm and the Sigma 150-500 mm; it can also compete successfully with the Canon 100-400L. Mind you, it offers a wider range of focal lengths, better stabilization and is cheaper than the Canon as well. So far we haven’t tested the new Nikkor 80-400 mm VR so we can’t compare the Tamron to it but even if the Nikkor is significantly better than the Tamron, the latter, being so good and two times cheaper, still remains an excellent option, still offering a wider focal range.

Really, it is our pleasure to do and then describe such tests. Not only you get a lens with unique parameters, not found among its rivals, but also it is optically so good that you can recommend it without a second thought.
