10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with a ring type ultrasonic motor (USM) so the focusing is noiseless and very fast. The autofocus can go through the whole distance scale, set the focus and confirm it in about 0.2-0.3 of a second which is a sensational result.

We also don’t have any reservations concerning the accuracy of the mechanism. In the studio conditions the lens didn’t miss one single time - its good performance was due mainly to a good motor and a relatively large depth of field, connected with such parameters.

When it comes to the front or back focus tendency there was just a minor problem when the lens was attached to the 50D. It seemed the focusing range was slightly moved backward; still even in the most difficult conditions, while photographing an object from very close quarters, it still remained sharp. A slight micro regulation was enough to eliminate that completely. With the lens attached to the 5D MkIII everything was perfect from the very beginning and we didn’t have to correct anything.
