Samyang 50 mm f/1.4 AS UMC

3 December 2014
Arkadiusz Olech

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The Samyang 1.4/50 corrects the coma in the corners of the APS-C/DX sensor very well; the corners of full frame are another matter. Even after stopping down to f/2.0 the coma makes itself felt there; fortunately that effect is not especially high. Some 50 mm devices could fare noticeably worse and our tests of the Voigtlander 1.4/58 or the Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 are the proof.

The lens doesn’t have any problems with astigmatism for a change. The average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 values amounted to just 3.8% which we consider to be a low value.

The defocused light points don’t look very well though. At the maximum relative aperture you can notice the influence of bad spherical aberration correction which creates a distinct ring. After stopping down the ring disappears and the light spread in the circle looks smoother but still you can find traces of onion ring bokeh. What’s more, the eight-blade, not especially circular aperture makes itself felt too and the remains of the vignetting in the frame corners are visible even up to f/2.8.
