Venus Optics LAOWA 7.5 mm f/2 MFT

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The Venus Optics LAOWA 7.5 mm f/2 MFT has serious problems concerning coma and other optical aberrations which cause deformations of point-like images of light sources in the frame corners. In fact the coma can be noticed even on stopping down the aperture by 1-2 EV.

Night sky presents a similar result – once again there are noticeable deformations of stars on the edge of full frame which shapes look like the shape of the diode described earlier.

The astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, reached 9.1%. It is a value on the borderline between low and average level. It should be also noticed that the astigmatism makes itself felt mainly by f/2.0 and f/2.8; from f/4.0 onwards it becomes negligible.

With the Laowa’s 2/7.5 parameters it is really difficult to obtain wide out-of-focus areas in your photos. Still their appearance is not something you could call a crucial feature of this lens. It’s a good thing because the appearance of circles of light is just moderately good - you can see a lot of brightness gradients, deformations, and also poor round shape provided by the aperture with 7 diaphragm blades.
