7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

We don’t have any serious reservations concerning coma correction. The images of diodes are just slightly distorted no matter what focal length you employ. The Canon 10-18 mm had very similar results. What’s interesting, both aforementioned cheap lenses fared better than their more expensive brothers so the Canon 10-22 mm and the Nikkor 10-24 mm.

Astigmatism is corrected properly well only at the longest focal length where its value amounted to 3.9%. In the 10-15 mm range the tested lens had a lot of problems with correction of that aberration because the average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values amounted to as much as 23.4%. It seems the quality of the plastic barrel might influence off-axis layout of certain optical elements and it leads to an increase of the level of that off-axis aberration.

In photos below we present defocused circles of light, produced by the tested Nikkor. These circles don’t look nice, with practically all unwanted effects like an uneven spread of light, a lot of local extreme points, a lighter rim, and an influence of mechanical vignetting. Still the rivals hardly presented a better performance in that category. After all the appearance of out-of-focus areas is not the most important feature of such constructions.
