Nikon Nikkor AF-P DX 10-20 mm f/4.5-5.6G VR

11. Summary

Pros:

  • good image quality in the frame centre,
  • sensible correction of longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • moderate coma,
  • good performance against bright light,
  • tremendously fast, silent and accurate autofocus,
  • rich accessory kit for this price point.

Cons:

  • image quality on the edge of the frame at longer focal lengths should have been better,
  • high level of lateral chromatic aberration across the focal range,
  • significant astigmatism,
  • plastic barrel and mount.
The Nikkor AF-P DX 10-20 mm f/4.5-5.6G VR is, undoubtedly, a lens full of compromises. You cannot avoid them if you want to offer the beginners an ultra wide angle model for a good price. Still, it seems the final result is satisfying – for a bit less than $310 you get an instrument which you can shoot very nice photos, a nice complementation of kit zoom lenses which focal lengths starts from 18 mm.

Our summary would be far more positive if only not for the Canon EF-S 10-18 mm IS STM. That lens proved you can offer even better optical value for even lower price. A bit wider focal range is the only saving grace of the Nikkor; apart from that the Canon can’t cooperate with Nikon reflex cameras. The owners of Nikon cameras might gnash their teeth but, I suppose, the fact that there is a bit better and a bit cheaper lens won’t make them change the entire system.
