7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The Fujinon XF 23 mm f/1.4 R didn't exactly distinguish itself when it comes to coma correction and, unfortunately, the Viltrox followed its steps. The aberration is very pronounced, visible even on stopping down the aperture by 1 EV. It certainly affects image quality on the edge of the frame in a negative way and, because of its high level, the application of this fast lens in astrophotography might be problematic.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, amounted to 6.9%. It's a value a tad lower than 10% we registered during the test of the Fujinon 1.4/23.

Defocused circles of light look very well – as a result you get very nice and smooth out-of-focus areas with just a slight rim that appears when you stop down the lens a bit more. Our reservations concern mainly the fact that circles are truncated because of mechanical vignetting. That effect is visible even when you pass to the vicinity of f/2.8 relative aperture.
