10. Autofocus

The autofocus of the Sony FE 1.4/35 GM joined with the Sony A7R II is completely noiseless. Still, we can't praise the speed of the mechanism as running through the whole range and confirming the focus takes about 0.8-0.9 of a second. For a journalistic lens it's a weak result.

When you pass to the newer A7R IV body, the lens improves its performance. Its focus motor remains silent and it becomes much quicker – running through the whole range and confirming the focus takes no longer than 0.5 of a second, a very good result. What's interesting, when attached to the same body the cheaper FE 35 mm f/1.8 was even a tad faster.

We have no reservations concerning the accuracy of the autofocus. The mechanism fared exceedingly well both in the studio and during outdoor sessions. Apart from that, we didn't notice any front or back focus tendencies, no matter to what body the lens was attached to.
