1. Introduction

The history of standard Sony FE mount 50 mm lenses started with the launch of the Sony full frame mirrorless cameras in October 2013. That year the Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55 mm f/1.8 ZA was released.

We had to wait two years and a half for another model of that type – we saw the Sony FE 50 mm f/1.8 only in March 2016. After that the launches gathered more momentum. In July 2016 the company presented the Sony Zeiss Planar T* FE 50 mm f/1.4 ZA, and a bit over one month later - the Sony FE 50 mm f/2.8 Macro.

Of course we mention here just Sony products, or those they have manufactured cooperating with Zeiss; there have been at least two times more products, both manual and autofocus, released by third-party companies.

As if it wasn't enough, in March 2021 Sony decided to take one step further. They launched the FE 50 mm f/1.2 GM as the sixtieth Sony E and FE mount lens, and also the thirteenth G Master lens. It is an important decision because, so far, the Sony line-up didn't feature such a fast standard instrument; what's more, when it comes to physical dimensions the new device isn't bigger or heavier than the Zeiss Planar 1.4/50, presented earlier. The following chart presents a comparison of all 50 mm lenses we mention in this part of our test. We also would like to thank Sony for delivering us the final specimen of the tested lens even before its official launch – that move allowed us to test it very quickly.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
