6. Distortion

The performance of the Sony 1.2/50 GM in this category is quite interesting. Standard 50-55 mm lenses had some distortion-related problems but it concerned mainly the older, double gauss constructions. Newer lenses manage to correct this aberration practically to zero.

Meanwhile Sony constructors decided to introduce slight moustache distortion in order to minimize geometric deformations. As a result our measurement on the smaller APS-C sensor shows the barrel variation of -0.37% and on full frame it turns into 'pincushion' of +0.65%. That 'pincushion' is a result of a distinct bend of the line near the very edge of the frame.

Even though official results aren't that high and, in typical situations, it seems distortion won't bother you we do regret that a lens of this type still features moustache distortion. I don't think I've seen such an approach in any other fixed-focal lens with a similar angle of view.
