5. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

The way the Argus corrects longitudinal chromatic aberration deserves to be praised. A very fast aperture means the bar was set very high in this category but Laowa optics specialists didn't have any problems with it. You can't notice any trace of aberration even at the maximum relative aperture – a round of applause!

Now let's check how the lens fares when it comes to lateral chromatic aberration – an appropriate graph, with values depending on used aperture, is shown below.

The aberration increases up from the maximum relative aperture to f/2.0; then it decreases very slightly and stabilizes near a level of over 0.04%. All results are within low and very low levels so also in this category the Argus should be praised.

It's worth adding that the tested lens fares here better than the Olympus and just slightly weaker than the Nokton.

Spherical aberration

Spherical aberration correction is not a strong point of this lens and it can be noticed in all three aspects that allow you to assess that aberration. Firstly, you see sligth 'focus shift' effect after passing from f/0.95 to f/1.4. Secondly, images at the maximum relative aperture feature very characteristic 'mist', typical for badly corrected spherical aberration. Thirdly, circles of light reached before and behind the focal point differ a lot: the first one features very soft edges, the second one – distinctly brighter rim.
