10. Autofocus and focus breathing

Autofocus

The autofocus of the Samyang AF 50 mm f/1.4 FE II joined with the Sony A7R III is completely noiseless but not especially quick. Running through the whole distance range and confirming the focus takes about 1 second and this time doesn't depend on the direction of work.

The accuracy of the focusing mechanism is not perfect because both in studio and outside we managed to register some misses. Still their number didn't exceed 4-5% so they didn't make us especially worried.

The tested lens shows a slight back focus tendency but this effect wasn't especially pronounced; even when we shot from close range depth of field managed to include the aim, marginally but still.

Samyang AF 50 mm f/1.4 FE II - Autofocus and focus breathing

Focus breathing

Focus breathing tests show reframing images as you oversharp them. We conduct such a test by manually passing from the minimum focusing distance to infinity with the aperture stopped down; then we check how the field of view of the lens changed as a result. The test video of the tested Samyang lens is presented below:

After comparing freeze-frames from this video we can estimate that focus breathing of the tested lens doesn't exceed 1% so is, in fact, zero. The only change of the frame content stems from the fact that our testing station wasn't exactly stable. We are going to work on it.

The tested lens can be only praised in this area – it presents the proper focus breathing correction, an example to follow by both, the Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and the much more expensive Sony FE 50 mm f/1.4 GM.
