Sony FE 50-150 mm f/2 GM

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

Crops below show clearly that the Sony FE 50-150 mm f/2 GM deals well with coma correction and the correction of other optical aberrations of higher degree that might deform point-like sources of light. A slight blow up of images of a diode as you move away from the frame centre is the only thing you can notice. This effect is visible at all focal ranges.

In order to make our test more interesting we decided to show photos of a bright star positioned in the frame corner. This test proved to be even more demanding – far from the centre of the frame point-like images of the star change into slight commas, a classic coma symptom. The effect is not especially pronounced so you shouldn't worry and there are no reasons to criticize the Sony in this area.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values, amounted to 8.8%. It is a value positioned on the borderline between a low and medium level so, practically, it doesn't give you any reasons to worry. It's also worth noticing that the highest level of astigmatism we measured at the shortest focal length.

The appearance of out-of-focus images is good for a zoom-type of device. You can't notice any disturbing things but, if you take a closer look you can notice traces of onion ring bokeh stemming from aspherical elements inside the construction. Some reservations can be expressed when it comes to mechanical vignetting as it doesn't disappear completely even on stopping down the aperture by 2 EV.
