6. Distortion and field of view
Field of view
A rectilinear 105 mm lens on full frame should provide an angle of view amounting to 23.28 degrees. In their specifications Nikon states a bit lower value, that of 23 degrees and 10 minutes of arc, so 23.17 degrees. We decided to take a reality check. In order to do that we took photos of the starry sky and saved them as uncorrected JPEG files.Then we transformed the pixel layout (X,Y) from the photo into the equatorial coordinate system (right ascension and declination), which locates a star on a celestial sphere. That way we could determine the field of view of the lens with utter precision and in the right way, so for rays of light coming from infinity.Our transformation was based on positions of 78 stars spread evenly across the frame. An average mesh-fitting error of the coordinates amounted to just 7 seconds of arc. Our result of 23.96 degrees, with the measuring error on a level of 0.02 of a degree, is a bit higher than official values stated by the producers but the difference is really slight. It means that the real focal length of the Nikkor is closer to 102 mm than 105 mm. In such a situation the producer should state rather 100 mm on the casing, not 105 mm.
Distortion
In case of the performance on the smaller APS-C/DX sensor geometric deformations are completely imperceptible. Our official result amounts to -0.34% so is, within the margin of error, tantamount with zero.
On full frame distortion is a bit higher and we deal here with slight 'barrel' of -0.75% - a level you still shouldn't carp about.
