4. Image resolution

Our resolution test (resolution meaning the MTF50 function values) of Sony FE lenses is based on RAW files from the 42.4 Mpix sensor of the Sony A7R II, the Sony A7R III, or the Sony A7R IIIa cameras. In the case of this kind of detector, the decency level we set is about 39-41 lpmm and the best fixed focal lenses have been able to slightly exceed 80 lpmm. Record breaking lenses can get as high as over 85 lpmm or even 90 lpmm.So far, our list of such record-breakers features the Sigma A 17-40 mm f/1.8 DC (89.9 lpmm), the Meike 85 mm f/1.4 FF STM (90.2 lpmm) and the Sony FE 50 mm f/1.4 GM (90.9 lpmm).

Now let's check how the Viltrox AF 35 mm f/1.2 LAB compares, with its resulst in the frame centre, on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor and on the edge of full frame.

When it comes to the frame center, you can say at once that the results are very pleasing to the eye. Already at the maximum relative aperture, you deal with a very good result of almost 64 lpmm. Stopping down the aperture makes the resolution increase, so up from f/2.0 you deal with an outstanding level, reaching near 85 lpmm, and by f/2.8 the lens reaches the peak of its performance, amounting to 88.7 lpmm. You can say that, within the margin of error, the tested Viltrox almost gets a place on our podium – a round of applause!

The performance on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor can also be described in superlatives only. You can notice slight wavering by f/1.4 but it doesn't change the fact that you deal here with a good level, exceeding 55 lpmm. On stopping down, the lens can reach excellent values near 70 lpmm.

On the very demanding edge of full frame, we didn't notice anything worrisome. Even at the maximum relative aperture, you deal with a level of 48 lpmm, distinctly above the decency level. As if it wasn't enough, near f/5.6 the lens can reach high results, near 67 lpmm. Such a performance is certainly impressive.

To sum up, when it comes to resolution, the Viltrox AF 35 mm f/1.2 LAB didn't have one single weak spot in our test. This instrument allows you to enjoy good image quality across the frame and up from the maximum relative aperture. On stopping down, it can reach quite outstanding levels. It seems, with its latest launches, Viltrox has become a really strong player, a serious rival not only of Sigma, Tamron, or Samyang, but also of Nikon and Sony.

At the end of this chapter, traditionally, we present crops taken from photos of our resolution chart; they were taken from JPEG files saved along with RAW files we used for the analysis above.
