5. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

The optical construction of the tested Sigma features many special elements so our expectations concerning correction of longitudinal chromatic aberration were really high. Crops below prove that we weren't disappointed. The aberration, described here, is practically invisible; only at the maximum relative aperture out-of-focus areas positioned further away show just a trace of blue colouring before the focus and yellow behind it. The effect is really low and shouldn't bother you in practice.

Everything is in perfect order. No matter what aperture and detector you employ, the results stay at a very low level. This is a great performance, but you have to add that the rival Sony and Samyang performed equally well here. Only the Nikkor Z 1.4/35 lagged distinctly behind.

Spherical aberration

First photos of this chapter feature hardly any focus shift effect. Some problems connected to spherical aberration can be noticed in out-of-focus circles of light generated before and behind the focal point. First of the circles shows soft edges and the second one has a brighter rim. It is a classic symptom of spherical aberration that hasn't been completely corrected.

On the other hand image resolution from f/1.4 to f/2.8 is excellent, without the characteristic mist that indicates weak correction of spherical aberration. It allows us to say that, overall, this aberration is kept well in check.
