11. Summary
- well-made body with a metal bayonet,
- excellent performance at the center of the frame at 10 mm,
- good performance at the center of the frame for longer focal lengths (apart from the maximum aperture),
- small chromatic aberration for the range 17-24 mm,
- well-corrected astigmatism,
- vignetting small, compared to competitors,
- good work against bright light,
- accurate autofocus.
Cons
- poor image quality at the edge of the frame,
- big chromatic aberration for the combination of maximum aperture and the shortest focal length,
- visible coma,
- autofocus too slow for this range of focal lengths.
On one hand we have no doubts that the new Tamron is better than its predecessor. It’s better in terms of focal lengths’ range, aperture and optical characteristics. We also have no doubt that it can easily enter the lists with the previous generation of ultra wide-angle lenses, so lenses like Canon 10-22 mm, Nikkor 12-24 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm or Tokina 10-24 mm.

The trouble is, the market moved forward and Tamron 10-24 mm has to compete with other lenses now. We know that in comparison to Tokina 11-16 it has better focal length range, as aperture and optical characteristics are rather in favor of Tokina. Time and our tests will show how it will perform in comparison with the new Sigma 10-20 mm f/3.5 or Nikkor 10-24 mm.
