10. Autofocus

The Canon’s EF-S 18-55 mm autofocus is not perfect. The lens missed 16% of the time on average. The lens also missed more often when we decreased the focal length.

The sharpness adjustment isn’t fast and, because of the lens’s weak aperture, there are situations when the lens tries to focus for a long time before it makes a frequently wrong decision.

In spite of the fact that the lens isn’t equipped with a USM motor, its performance is much quieter than its fixed focal competitors like the EF 2.8/28 or 1.8/50.

Since our tested lens doesn’t have a good aperture it is hard to get small sharpness of depth pictures. Therefore, from the picture below, it is hard to make a clear conclusion as far as front or back focusing is concerned. We think, however, that the lens has a tendency towards front focusing.
