The Sony DT 35 mm f/1.8 SAM, as its name already indicates very clearly, is equipped with a SAM motor which is supposed to make the autofocus performance more efficient. It is difficult to say what benefits it provides because during focusing the motor whirrs distinctly and the speed doesn’t impress us either. Running through the whole scale takes about one second.

Unfortunately the autofocus accuracy of the A580 plus DT 1.8/35 set is not high. Apart from a noticeable dispersion between consecutive shots the lens also showed a pronounced back focus. The A580 body doesn’t have any autofocus microregulation available so the only solution to this problem was switching to LiveView focusing mode and use the contrast detection method. It was slower but at least devoid of any unwanted tendencies.
