As we said in the introduction, when it comes to fixed-focal f/1.4-f/1.8 lenses, recently Nikon has been the most active producer on the market. Almost all of its constructions can be called successful but so far we have complained about them. In many cases the number of flaws revealed during our test simply didn’t justify high price tags. Still you can say Nikon have improved during the last couple of years, proving that they know how to construct top-of-the-range optics. After the excellent Nikkor AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED you get the Nikkor AF-S 28 mm f/1.4E ED which is almost as good; during our test it proved that it is able to compete on equal terms with the Otus 1.4/28, an instrument not only physically bigger but also much more expensive; apart from that the new Nikkor prevailed over the slower AF-S 28 mm f/1.8G model in practically all testing categories.

The new lens is not completely free of flaws, because at this price point you should expect lower levels of longitudinal chromatic aberration and better coma correction. Still, in our opinion, excellent resolution results, both near the maximum relative aperture and on stopping down, might recompense those slip-ups.
