1. Introduction

In February 2019 the L mount full frame Panasonic system was launched with two universal zoom lenses and one 1.4/50 standard device. The problem was that this standard lens was standard in name alone; it weighted almost one kilogram and cost over $2000.

It was clear that soon another 50 mm device, with a far more available price, had to appear on the market. It was indeed the case – already in June 2021 Panasonic launched the S 50 mm f/1.8 model that weighed 300 grams and its price tag was around $350.

Despite its moderate weight the new lens is not as small as older double gauss constructions. It's kind of obvious why – with 9 elements positioned in 8 groups it is also more optically complex than them.

Panasonic Lumix S 50 mm f/1.8 - Introduction

We've already tested the Panasonic S Pro 50 mm f/1.4 but we consider it rather an interesting curiosity, a power show, not a model that will be wildly popular among photographers. That's why we had to test also the cheaper, system standard, a far more frequent choice than its bigger, heavier, more expensive brother. We got one specimen of the tested lens courtesy of the Polish Panasonicsubsidiary and the results of our testing procedure you can find in the following chapters- enjoy!
