When it comes to the performance against bright light it seems somebody must have dropped the ball. As a result we got a lens perfect for rainbow-catching photos even when there is no rainbow on the sky. Joking aside: photos below show clearly that the performance against bright light of the Samyang 1.8/85 is simply weak. We could understand the presence of these ghosting and flares if the sun was situated inside the frame. Unfortunately you can catch a lot of these even when the sun is moved well away from it. What’s more, in such conditions exactly you can also register that famous rainbow – but only near the maximum relative aperture. If you close the lens down more distinctly there is no rainbow anymore; still it doesn’t mean there are no problems. Huge artefacts still appear and they can be caught even when the sun is removed from the frame corners by a distinct angular distance (one of the photo corners is overexposed).
In this category the lens is experiencing probably the most serious slip-up in the whole test. It is especially painful as the lens doesn’t feature many groups of optic elements and its front element is well hidden inside the barrel. The task of ensuring proper performance against bright light in that case wasn’t especially difficult. The question about influence of the shiny ring near the mount in the back, not blackened at all from the inside, remains still open.
