9. Ghosting and flares

A theory about anti-reflective coatings which are not especially effective in case of light falling at obtuse angles is verified negatively by the performance against bright light. Looking at sample shots, shown below, we think the lens fares sensibly well – of course taking into account the presence of a huge, convex front element and a very wide angle of view. On the other hand you have to remember that the result in this category depends not only on coatings but also on optical construction, the shape of the barrel, and the degree of blackening of both the barrel and edges of the elements. Perhaps the Viltrox optics specialists, knowing that the coatings are weak, took proper care of other parts. Anyway the performance against bright light is beyond reproach.

If we had to compare the performance of the Viltrox in this category to that of the Tokina it would be a draw. The Viltrox provides more light artifacts when the sun is within the frame, the Tokina experiences more problems when the sun is outside the frame.
