Samyang AF 45 mm f/1.8 FE

11. Summary

Pros:

  • shapely, small, and lightweight casing,
  • very good image quality in frame centre,
  • slight lateral chromatic aberration,
  • good distortion correction,
  • low coma,
  • silent and accurate autofocus,
  • good price-performance and price-quality ratio.

Cons:

  • too weak image quality on the edge of the frame, especially in the wide area close to the maximum relative aperture
  • a bit of problems with longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • spherical aberration not corrected as well as it should be,
  • high vignetting on full frame.
Even though the list of cons, presented above, features some important points, the summary of our test is going to be definitely positive. The optical market can accomodate different types of instruments: uncompromising, fast, heavy constructions with singificant dimensions and such instruments as the tested Samyang, a lens that seems to include some intentional compromises.

I am more than sure that many people will accept these compromises in order to get a moderately priced lens which is handy, small, and lightweight. In return, they will be repaid with very good image quality in the frame centre.
