7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

Such a fast lens is a real treat for fans of photography in poor lighting conditions, especially astrophotographers. Perhaps the producers took their expectations into account and delivered a lens that correct coma in a perfect way? No such luck... Photos below show clearly that the Fujinon XF 50 mm f/1.0 R WR corrects that aberration poorly – it remains visible not only by f/1.0 but also by f/1.4. Another slip-up...

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between lateral and horizontal MTF50 function values, amounted to 8.6%. It is a moderate level so there is no reason to complain in this area.

Defocused circles of light look very well. As a result you get very nice out-of-focus areas, without any onion-ring bokeh despite the fact that the lens features aspherical elements. Our reservations concern mainly truncation of the circles caused by mechanical vignetting; still that effect disappears on stopping down the apperture by 2 EV.
