6. Distortion

Like in the case of the Sony FE 40 mm f/2.5G, tested by us before, the lens attached to a camera body deactivates distortion correction option. As a result distortion is corrected automatically. In the case of this model, however, we at least know why – deformations observed in RAW files are simply huge.

Let's start with JPEG files – here everything looks impeccably. At the smaller APS-C sensor we got a result of just +0.09%, practically zero within the margin of error. On full frame we observed low pincushion level of -0.36%, once again nothing that you might called bothersome in any way.

Already results from the smaller APS-C sensor but for RAW files prove that optics constructors have given up distortion correction completely. You deal with a significanct barrel distortion level, that of -3.94%, but it's nothing compared to the result on full frame, which reaches as high as -8.62%.

It looks especially bad when compared to the results of rival lenses. The Tamron didn't correct that aberration well either, with a full frame distortion level of -5.89%, but still it was significantly better than the result of the Sony. The Samyang AF 2.8/24 FE fared the best, with a low distoriton level additionally diminished by moustache deformations.
