The Panasonic Lumix S Pro 50 mm f/1.4 didn't have it easy when it comes to the performance against bright light. After all it features a very big front element that is positioned quite shallowly inside the barrel. At the same time it is a lens that doesn't change its outer dimensions so the focusing is performed by movements of optical elements inside the construction. It limits the number of places where you can put appropriate apertures and ribs. As if it wasn't enough, you deal here with 13 elements positioned in 11 groups – it means unwanted light reflections can happen on as many as 22 air-to-glass surfaces.
Taking into account the fact that the bar is set here exceptionally high we should also limit our reservations. At the maximum relative aperture the situation is simply very good, with light artifacts few and far between and not especially intensive. When you stop the aperture in a more decisive manner the performance looks a bit weaker. Then you land on the borderline between low and medium level. It is important, though, that no matter what aperture you employ and where you place the source of bright light in the frame, the overall contrast of images remain very high.
In this category the Panasonic once again proved to be better than the rival Sony model which performance against bright light we assessed as moderately good.
