Before saying anything else, we have to admit that in the image sharpness category, the Canon 17-55 mm turns out to be fantastic. Within the whole focus range, for f/4.0 - f/5.6 stops, the tested MTF50 values reached a 40 lpmm level which is comparable with the best prime lenses. The Canon wide-open aperture test results are also worth mentioning. With the range of 17.30 mm the test results reached a high value of 38 lpmm, while the results of 32 lpmm for a 55 mm is a very good score. In brief, the stop range and focusing of the tested Canon gave very sharp pictures in the centre of the frame.

Although the situation of the frame edges isn't that great anymore, it's nothing to complain about. The decent level of 30 lpmm is much higher for all the focus ranges, as well as the most commonly used stop range of f/4.0 to f/11. A slight edge "blur" can only be obtained for wide-open aperture and focusing of 17 mm.
