The turn of the year 2007/2008 brought the release of the twin lenses: Tokina AT-X M35 Pro DX 35 mm F/2.8 and Pentax smc DA 35 mm F/2.8 Macro Limited. Considering the cooperation of the two companies, we supposedly have to do with the same optical structure put in slightly different barrels characteristic for both manufacturers’ products.

The lenses are interesting, as despite their short focal length, they are meant for macro photography, providing us with the reproduction scale of 1:1 and a minimum focusing distance of only 14 centimeters. This triggers the need for shooting subjects from just a centimeter away from the end of the barrel. It is therefore hard to imagine using the lens for bugs. It is much more of use in numismatics or anywhere the subject can’t spread its wings and run away.

A positive feature of the lens is the fact that on a small APS-C/DX sensor, for which it is designed, it becomes an equivalent of a classic 50 mm lens. It is true that the aperture of F/2.8 is not a perfect solution for this matter but it’s hardly a reason to complain. Macro lenses are often very sharp, even wide-open (we will see if this is the case), besides, I used to use a Tessar 2.8/50 for my analogue body and I managed to deal with such aperture.
