Sigma C 18-300 mm f/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM

10. Autofocus

The Sigma 18–300 mm is equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus HSM motor. Its work is very silent and reasonably fast – running through the whole distance scale and confirming the focus takes about 0.8 of a second. What’s very interesting the Sigma 18-300 mm cooperates with the Nikon D7000 camera better than both Nikkors 18-300. The autofocus action is quieter and faster although at the longer end the Sigma sometimes wavers like both Nikkors. Still it is a rather strange occurrence that a lens constructed by an independent producer is able to cooperate a bit better with the brand name camera than the lenses produced by the same company as the camera itself. We know Nikon can manufacture lenses with a brilliant SWM motor. Have they tried to save too much on both Nikkors?

When it comes to the accuracy of the autofocus the Sigma was slightly worse than both Nikkors. The difference wasn’t perhaps huge, with the number of misses in studio conditions never exceeding 5%, but still, in the same conditions the Nikkors had just 2% of misses.

There were no problems with front or back focus tendencies for a change.
