Canon EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

11. Summary

Pros:
  • very good image quality in the frame centre,
  • decent image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • lack of problems with spherical aberration,
  • good coma correction,
  • slight astigmatism,
  • sensible appearance of blur areas,
  • efficient and silent autofocus,
  • good price/image quality ratio.

Cons:

  • high distortion on the wide angle which, additionally, is of the moustache variation,
  • significant vignetting at 18 mm,
  • work against bright light at the longer focal length could have been better.

The results of our test and some of the Canon’s EF-S 18–135 mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM parameters suggest clearly that, despite dealing here with a construction featuring the same number of elements and group as its older predecessor it is a completely new design. New and – what’s important – better.

The tested Canon is a very solid instrument, completely recommendable to every amateur photographer who needs something more universal and better than your typical 18-55 mm kit lens. The presence of a very efficient STM motor means you can also shoot your videos without any problems.

1200 PLN you have to pay for the Canon is perhaps not a small amount of money but also it would be difficult to call it excessive. What’s more, when you buy it as a part of a reflex camera-and-lens bundle it will cost you less than 1000 PLN and then it becomes a very sensible choice indeed.
