1. Introduction

An instrument with a focal length of about 100 mm and an aperture as fast as f/2.8 is one of the most popular full frame macro lenses. Such devices are offered by the majority of producers; small wonder also Sony decided to include it in their line-up of full frame lenses designed for mirrorless cameras.

In March 2015 a piece of information was released about the Sony FE 90 mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS. It seems the producers included everything they had the best in that project: it is a fully-fledged 1:1 reproduction ratio lens from the top-of-the-range G series, it has a weather-sealed casing which doesn't change its dimensions, a silent autofocus, and an optical image stabilization unit. Unfortunately, such a lens cannot be cheap and, accordingly, the Sony costs about $1000, notably more than $750 you have to pay for the Canon EF 100 mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, or $810, the cost of the Nikkor AF-S 105 mm f/2.8 IF-ED VR Micro.

Still we have to remember the Sony is also the newest construction. Does it offer more than the Canon and the Nikon? Let's find out by reading the following chapters.
