10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with the DDSSM motor (the acronym stands for 'Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor) and, after attaching it to the Sony A7R II, the focusing mechanism performance is practically noiseless. Still, when it comes to its speed, you can have a lot of reservations. Running through the whole distance range from the minimum focus to infinity and confirming the right position takes about 1.7 seconds. When you move the other way round that time might be even longer, reaching almost 2 seconds. It is really slow...

Fortunately you have a focus limiter at your disposal; in the range from 0.5 of a meter to infinity the autofocus moves a lot quicker – the focusing lasts just 0.4-0.5 of a second, a really good time.

The lens didn't have any problems with accuracy; no matter whether we tested it in studio conditions or during an outdoor session it reached practically one hundred per cent. We also didn't notice any front or back focus tendencies.
