10. Autofocus

The autofocus of the Nikkor MC 2.8/50 attached to the Nikon Z7 is completely noiseless but when it comes to its speed there are no miracles. Still, you deal here with a macro lens with an extendable tube. In the FULL mode it has to handle a huge distance range from 0.16 of a meter to infinity and it takes about 2 seconds to go from one end to the other. Of course you can employ the focus limiter but it works only in the macro mode so from 0.16 to 0.3 of a meter.

Still it's worth mentioning the fact that, if the lens is situated in positions outside 1:1 or 1:2 reproduction scale levels the performance of the autofocus becomes quite efficient – in such situations focusing never lasts longer than half a second. What's more, the mechanism never wavers, going straight to the right position and reaching it the first time without any oscillation.

When it comes to accuracy we didn't experience any problems no matter whether we tested the lens in the studio or outside. We also didn't notice any front or back focus tendencies.
