Pros:

  • solid casing, mostly made of metal,
  • excellent image resolution in the frame centre,
  • very good image resolution on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
  • good resolution on the edge of full frame,
  • slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • negligible lateral chromatic aberration,
  • moderate distortion,
  • low astigmatism,
  • slight vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
  • silent and accurate autofocus,
  • nice out-of-focus areas,
  • 5-year warranty period,
  • very favourable price/quality and price/performance ratio.

Cons:

  • high vignetting on full frame,
  • performance against bright light leaves a lot to be desired,
  • distinct focus breathing.
Even though the list of cons of the tested lens is not empty we still assess it very high. For a price of $275 you get a shapely, solidly built, very sharp lens that guarantees you excellent results up from the maximum relative aperture. In fact the tested Viltrox is able to put to shame many more renowned and more expensive rivals. As if it wasn't enough, the producers offer you a 5-year warranty period. The price/quality and price/performance ratios are here very favourable indeed.

We didn't have any doubts whether or not we should award the Viltrox AF 85 mm f/2 EVO our 'Good purchase' badge. A round of applause!
