To provide a more complete picture of the Lumix's performance in this category, we also decided to present crops of the night sky taken from the upper-right corner of the full-frame area. This time, however, we show images captured at f/2.8, f/4.0 and f/5.6. The star test proved somewhat more demanding, revealing traces of coma occurring mainly at shorter wavelengths and therefore manifesting themselves as a blue glow that stretches the image towards the edge of the frame.

Astigmatism, defined as the mean difference between the horizontal and vertical MTF50 values, measured 5.6%. This result lies on the borderline between very low and low levels, so the lens under review deserves praise in this category as well.
The Panasonic S 100 mm f/2.8 Macro delivers average-looking out-of-focus images. The presence of as many as three aspherical elements has resulted in a fairly pronounced onion-ring bokeh effect.
As for mechanical vignetting, we have a pleasant surprise here. The lens's compact dimensions and fixed-length design suggested that serious problems might occur in this respect. However, this aberration disappears completely as soon as the aperture is stopped down by 2 EV.
