The lens's compact dimensions, enclosed construction and large number of optical elements pose considerable challenges when it comes to ensuring good performance against bright light. The bar was set very high in this respect, and unfortunately, the lens failed to clear it. Most competitors performed better in this category, although none of them was flawless.
When the sun is in the frame or just outside it, we can capture numerous intense flares and ghost images, regardless of the aperture setting used. The consolation is that all these problems disappear when the bright light source is moved at least 5–10 degrees away from the corners of the frame. At that point, there are no light artifacts at all, and overall image contrast becomes very good.
