10. Autofocus

Nikkor AF-S 50 mm f/1.4G working with both Nikon bodies, used for the test, had the autofocus speed significantly below one second. He does it very silently, all you hear is the gentle rustle of the distance scale. When it goes from infinity to minimum or otherwise it’s slightly quicker on D3x than on D200 but it’s really difficult to say whether it works better with the former or with the latter.

The new Nikkor is not a sharp-shooting fiend, though. In the studio, with plenty of light it sometimes missed. While working with Nikon D200, the error number was as high as 12%, with full-frame D3x – 10%.

When it comes to backfocus or frontfocus, there were no problems while working with D3x camera. Although it has a feature to correct those aberrations, we didn’t have to use it because the cooperation with the lens was very smooth. To make matters worse in the case of D200, which doesn’t have such a feature as AF correction, we noticed a minimal tendency to backfocus.
